Keep Your Rocks On Display, Make Your Own Clay Ring Holders!

I love rings, and I have many more rings then I could ever wear at once. If you’re like me and you want your ring collection to stay on display so you can admire them all the time why not make yourself some ring holders? These ring holders are made out of air dry clay. Using clay gives you lots of scope for creativity, make your holders in any shape you like. This tutorial shows you the steps to make a simple ring holder.

You will need the following tools and materials to make a clay ring holder:

    1: Air dry modelling clay.

    Fimo Basic air dry clay

I used this terracotta colored Fimo air dry clay; however this DAS terracotta air dry clay will give a similar effect!

2: Some scrap paper or baking paper to work on (this clay can get a little messy).

Here are the steps for making a simple clay ring holder:

1: Take a portion of clay out of the package to work with.

Taking the air dry clay out of the package

    piece of clay

2: Work the clay with your hands for a while so that it become easier to form into shape without any cracks.

    rolling clay

    one rolled piece

3: Once your clay has become more pliable, roll it between your hands to form a slight cone shape. Make sure the cone is thin enough at the for you to fit your rings on. Make sure that the bottom of the cone is wide enough to stop your rings from falling off completely!

    one holder formed

4: Make the base of your ring holder flat by carefully pressing it against your work surface so that it can stand on its own. Once you’ve got the basic shape you can add some decorative elements to your ring holders. I decided to keep these ones quite plain.

    both holders formed

    holders lying down

5: That’s it! How easy was that? Once you have formed all the shapes that you want, place the holders in a safe place, maybe out in the sun so they can dry.

    holders outside to dry

6: Once your ring holder is dry (it may take a couple of days for your clay to dry completely) it is ready to use! You can also paint your ring holders with acrylic paint to add an extra element of style. I painted these holders using turquoise and gold colored acrylic paint.

Wear Your Adventures: Taking DIY Jewelry Inspiration From Your Travels

While on my own travels I have been inspired to share my tips for acquiring special jewelry making materials while on the go! Traveling is so wonderful for so many reasons, but I think that one of the most exciting things about traveling to new places is the opportunity to obtain some beautiful and special DIY jewelry supplies. I have been lucky enough to travel to some wonderful destinations and I almost always return home with a suitcase full of beads, pendants, charms and stones. Jewelry making materials that I have brought home from overseas travels always hold an extra special quality about them; anything I make with them will instantly remind me of the places I’ve been and the wonderful experiences I had there.

Here are some of my tips and tricks for collecting DIY jewelry making materials while you are traveling.

1: Visit markets. I almost always find beautiful and affordable jewelry making materials when I visit markets in any city. Don’t be afraid to sift through trays of assorted knick-knacks and vintage findings, you never know what treasures you might find inside.

I got this rhinestone charm for one Euro at an Amsterdam market.

    flower ring
This ring was made with a shell button that I found at a market in Papeete, French Polynesia.

2: Repurpose pre-made pieces. Sometimes I will buy beaded bracelets or necklaces that I later take apart so that I can use the materials in my own designs. If you love the beads on a piece but you don’t love the design, don’t be afraid to make that purchase… you can always dismantle it and make something super special later.

These pearl beads came from a bracelet that I bought in French Polynesia that later fell apart.

3: Key chains can make for wonderful pendants. Key chains aren’t usually made in the finest of materials, but if you are looking for a souvenir that you will actually use, you could try turning a key chain charm into a cute pendant to hang around your neck instead.

    citrine necklace
This citrine charm was originally a key chain that I purchased in Banff, Canada.

4: Visit small or hidden stores. Smaller stores often stock all sorts of goodies that you might not normally see in larger stores or chain stores. Like markets, smaller, locally owned stores are likely to be the places where you find the real DIY treasures!

    Agate necklace
I found this pretty charm in a little store in San Gimignano, Italy.

6: Just explore. Get out there are wander around, you are bound to stumble upon something wonderful to take home and turn into amazing, one of a kind jewelry designs.

8: Use your travels as inspiration for your own special jewelry designs.

    • You can use the colors you saw on your travels as inspiration for new bead combinations.
    • Look at what the locals are wearing, their everyday style could influence yours
    • Consider using new materials; collect fabric samples, new beads, metal charms and small decorative items to incorporate into your designs.

How to Make a Necklace,  Step-By-Step Tutorials

This is a pendant with a twist… literally! Making one way too fun.

    two pairs of crazy earrings

I recently rediscovered the earrings pictured above that I made way back when I was in high school (a fair few years ago now) and they inspired me to make this simple necklace pendant tutorial. Making this pendant requires minimal use of tools and extra findings. This pendant is made using 32 gauge wire which is fine enough to manipulate using your fingers! All you need are your cutting pliers to cut your wire to size. So grab a handful of beads and some cool colored wires and go make your own crazy, cute wire pendant.

You will need the following tools and materials to make this wire pendant:

    1: Cutting pliers.

    A pair of cutting pliers

2: 32 gauge wire. I used this blue colored wire.

    Blue wire

3: A selection of beads. I used this assortment of glass beads.

    glass beads

    The Steps:

1: Cut the wire into different lengths using the cutting pliers. You can cut as many as you like. I cut eleven pieces of wire (one for finishing the top of the pendant).

    cutting blue wire

all pieces of blue wire cut

2: Take a bead or two and add them to the center of a piece of wire.

adding beads to middle of wire

3: Twist the ends of the piece of wire together to hold the beads in place.

    beads on wire

    twisting wire

4: Repeat steps 2 and three until only one piece of wire remains.

    all twisted charms

5: Gather all the wire pieces together and twist them together at the top.

    bundling all charms together

twisting tops of wire charms together

6: Trim the top of the bunch using the cutting pliers.

    trimming end of bundle

7: Take the remaining piece of wire and fold it in half.

    folding last piece of wire

8: Place the loop at the top of the pendant and wrap the rest of the wire around the top to secure the bead bunch in place.

    creating loop for top

9: Once the pieces are secured at the top, gently pull and shape the bead wires into your preferred position to complete the pendant.
